Arsenal Women have a strong defense but need better scoring. They prepare for the Women's Champions Cup.
In the past two months, Arsenal Women's team has shown a strong defense and a weak attack. After a loss to Bayern Munich in the Women's Champions League, the team has let in only four goals in 11 matches. They kept seven clean sheets, thanks to goalkeepers Daphne van Domselaar and Anneke Borbe. This includes a 2-0 win over Chelsea.
The team faces questions about their scoring. They have good players like Alessia Russo, Stina Blackstenius, Beth Mead, and Mariona Caldentey. But they miss many chances. In their last match against Manchester United, it ended 0-0. They took 25 shots but scored none.
Head coach Renee Slegers says they must improve finishing. She noted, "You can only get the three points if you score." She thinks their defense helps create chances. "We set ourselves up in so many good situations. It's just about that final ball going in," she added.
The defense looks good with 19-year-old Smilla Holmberg and players like Katie Reid. Slegers likes the mix of young and older players. Young ones bring energy and skill. She is excited to coach them and see them grow.
The team prepares for the first Women's Champions Cup. Slegers wants to win another trophy. She aims to stay in the WSL, FA Cup, and Europe. "We want to stay in all competitions for as long as possible," she said. They plan to improve in the second half of the season. Arsenal will play ASFAR in the semi-final at GTech Community Stadium. The final is at Emirates Stadium.
