Rafaela Borggräfe plays goalkeeper for FC Liverpool. She got a six-game ban for a discriminatory comment but can still join the German national team.
Rafaela Borggräfe joined FC Liverpool last summer from SC Freiburg. The English Football Association gave her a six-game ban after she made a discriminatory comment during a team photo in September 2025.
The German Football Association says Borggräfe is still in the wider group for the national team. They checked the case and said she can hope for future team calls.
The ban started before a game against FC Arsenal on December 6. By January 25, she had done five games of the ban. She could play against Tottenham but did not join that squad. She served the last game of her ban recently.
Borggräfe must join an education program as part of the ban. The DFB helped her with this, working with their Vice President for Equality and Diversity, Céline Šašić. This helps her understand what went wrong.
Borggräfe was picked for the national team in October but has not played an international game yet under coach Christian Wück. She keeps working on her actions and has a good chance for the future.
