Manchester City has signed US midfielder Sam Coffey. She joins from Portland Thorns on a long-term deal.
Manchester City signed Sam Coffey from Portland Thorns. The 27-year-old US midfielder agreed to a 3.5-year contract until 2029. The transfer fee is about 800,000 EUR. City wanted to add strength in midfield. They lead the Women’s Super League by six points. This helps their push for the title, their first since 2016.
Coffey played for Portland Thorns for three years. She was their captain in 2025. She had two years left on her contract. For the US national team, she has 42 matches, five goals, and four assists. She helped win gold at the 2024 Olympics. Coffey wanted to play in Europe. She said it is the right time in her career to try this challenge.
Portland Thorns let Coffey go to support her goals. She helped them win the 2022 NWSL title. She earned three Best XI picks in 2022, 2023, and 2025. Her move is a big change for the NWSL. Other stars like Alyssa Thompson and Naomi Girma went to Chelsea last year. Emily Fox now plays well for Arsenal after leaving North Carolina Courage.
The Women’s Super League starts again this weekend after winter break. Manchester City is at the top with a good lead. Other teams signed players too. Brighton got midfielder Olaug Tvedten. Leicester signed full-back Ashleigh Neville from Tottenham. City’s director Therese Sjogran welcomes Coffey. She said Coffey can help the team do even better.
