Manchester United has signed Ellen Wangerheim from Hammarby. The 21-year-old forward will play for the Women’s Super League team. She is the third player to join in the January transfer window. Hanna Lundkvist and Lea Schüller joined before her.
Matt Johnson is the director of women’s football at United. He calls Wangerheim one of Europe’s best young players. She is dynamic and versatile. She can score goals well. The club is happy to have her and will help her grow.
Wangerheim is excited to join Manchester United. She feels proud to wear the club shirt. It has always been her dream to play at a big European club. At Hammarby, she helped win the league title and the Swedish Cup in 2023. She has made over 100 appearances there. Fans may remember her from a Champions League game in August that United won 1-0 in Stockholm. She debuted for Sweden's senior team in April 2024 in a 1-1 draw with England at Wembley.
Wangerheim and Schüller will make United’s attack stronger. This comes after Rachel Williams left for Leicester and Geyse went to Club América. England midfielder Ella Toone will miss at least six weeks with a hip injury. United faces Atlético Madrid in the Women’s Champions League playoff soon.
