On Wednesday night, the U.S. women’s national team played a friendly match against New Zealand at CPKC Stadium in Kansas City. The team featured many young players as head coach Emma Hayes tested her roster. Midfielder Rose Lavelle led the team in the first half. The match ended with a clear 6-0 win, giving the team a boost in confidence.
Forward Emma Sears had an outstanding game, scoring three goals. She opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a goal assisted by Michelle Cooper. Sears scored her second goal in the 55th minute and completed her hat trick with a final goal in the 84th minute. This was her first hat trick with the national team and showed her growth as a player.
Young players Lily Yohannes and Claire Hutton also stood out during the match. Although they play in different leagues, they have been given chances to develop their skills together. Their teamwork, combined with Lavelle’s experience, helped create a strong midfield presence.
Defender Emily Sams, who has limited experience with the national team, made a notable impression. Usually playing centrally for her club, she was used as an outside back in this match. Her performance raised questions about how she might be used in future games.
The U.S. team will face Italy in two friendly matches in December. Coach Hayes plans to continue building the team as they prepare for future competitions, including the 2027 World Cup.
