Goalkeeper Melanie Wagner has moved from 1. FC Union Berlin to FC Viktoria 1899 Berlin. She wants more time on the field after less play at Union.
Melanie Wagner is a goalkeeper leaving 1. FC Union Berlin for their city rival FC Viktoria 1899 Berlin. She had a contract with Union until 2027. A transfer fee was paid but the amount is not shared.
The 23-year-old has been at Union Berlin for three and a half years. Before that she played for VfL Wolfsburg's second team and her youth club SV BW Hohen-Neuendorf in the U17 group. She joined Union at age 20 from VfL Wolfsburg II in summer 2022. In her first two seasons she was the main goalkeeper. Union won promotion to the 2. Bundesliga and the Berlin-Pokal in 2024. She played 47 games in Regionalliga Nordost with 31 clean sheets. In the promotion season she let in only five goals.
Her play time dropped in later seasons at Union. This season she made her Bundesliga debut as a sub in the last minutes against VfL Wolfsburg. She also had a clean sheet in a 2. Liga game against 1. FC Nürnberg and a strong show in the DFB Pokal win over RasenBallsport Leipzig. With new keeper Julia Kassen joining Union Wagner chose Viktoria for more chances. She played 52 games for Union in total.
At FC Viktoria 1899 Berlin the main goalkeeper Michèle Tschudin has a shoulder injury. This could mean more games for Wagner right away.
