Trinity Rodman wants to stay with the Washington Spirit but faces contract hurdles. The league blocked a proposed deal, and talks are ongoing between the club, the NWSL, and the players’ union.
Trinity Rodman signed a four-year deal with the Washington Spirit in 2022 that runs through December 31, 2025. Her contract’s annual pay was reported in US dollars; converted to euros, that amount is about €255,000 per year based on common mid-2025 exchange rates.
The Spirit proposed a new four-year contract that would have paid Rodman roughly €1,025,000 per season on average, but the league rejected the deal because of how it was structured and its fit with league rules.
In the NWSL, players sign with the league rather than directly with clubs, and the league reviews and can reject contracts that it finds inconsistent with its rules. That system gave the NWSL the authority to block the Spirit’s proposed deal.
The NWSL Players Association has filed a grievance on Rodman’s behalf, arguing the league’s rejection violated her rights as a free agent. The league must respond to the grievance within the process timeline, and a resolution is expected soon.
Owners and league officials are discussing new measures that could allow teams to pay higher wages to top players without breaching the salary limit. One proposed idea would let clubs classify some signings as high-impact players, giving those deals extra flexibility.
Rodman has said she may consider playing overseas, and the international transfer window opens on January 1. If the U.S. talks do not resolve quickly, interest from European clubs could grow.
